NSF (NSF International) is an independent, not-for-profit non-governmental organization established in 1944. Specializing in standard formulation, product testing and certification services in the fields of public health, safety and environmental protection, it is an authoritative organization in the field of public health and safety. The water quality safety testing and certification standards formulated by NSF are known as the highest standards in the industry, and are used as standards by the United States, Australia, and the European Union.

The full English name of the NSF-61 standard is "Drink Water System Components----Health Effects", which is a standard related to drinking water health, sanitation and environmental protection. It was established to minimize the adverse effects of indirect contact with drinking water of unhealthy and impure substances produced by water-wading products, accessories or materials in drinking water.
